The federally funded Neighborhood Stabilization Program provided the City of Elgin with the opportunity to acquire several condemned and foreclosed properties for rehabilitation. The city hired Liska Architects to assist them with turning this severely abused Italianate two-flat back into a single family home for a middle to upper income family. As part of the extensive historic fabric of Elgin, the City’s concerns focused on maintaining the historic nature of the 1880’s home while updating the infrastructure to conform with modern energy code requirements. Liska Architects’ design restored the remaining original features while incorporating modern heating and insulating technologies for a high level of energy efficiency that will save money for the new owners.
