Sustainability and maintaining the original character of their historic bungalow were the primary issues for the owners of this bungalow located in the Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago. Liska Architects’ proposed design for the expansion of their attic space incorporates both active and passive solar technologies, natural ventilation techniques and efficient use of space to reduce the heating load. The design also addresses the owner’s desire to maintain the historic character of the home by pushing the expansion to the rear of the home where it is less conspicuous and by incorporating built-ins and trim appropriate to the period of the original design.
